Uganda fleet buyer checklist

Compare tracking systems by what you can test.

A useful tracking quote explains the equipment, installation, recurring costs, authorised access and handover tests. For fuel monitoring, add tank compatibility and calibration; a map alone cannot measure fuel levels.

Choose the right scope

GPS tracking, fleet management or fuel monitoring?

GPS tracking

Choose this when the main question is where a vehicle is, where it travelled or whether it crossed a boundary. Test position time, ignition events, trip history and account access.

Tracking and installation →

Fleet management

Choose this when several people need to act on utilisation, driver activity, maintenance and operating reports. Ask who reviews each report and what decision it supports.

Assess fleet requirements →

Fuel monitoring

Choose this when you need measured fuel levels, refill events and unusual-drop reports. Confirm the sensor or vehicle data source, tank calibration and operating limits.

Compare written proposals

Eight questions before choosing a tracking company.

1. What is the complete price?

Separate equipment, fitting, platform, SIM/data, recurring fees, taxes, travel and optional work. Ask how many months of service the price covers.

2. Does the device suit the vehicle?

Confirm power requirements, mounting conditions, connectivity and the normal operating routes. Ask what happens when vehicle power or mobile coverage is lost.

3. Is the position current?

Check the location timestamp and reporting interval. A saved position can remain visible after a device stops reporting; ask how the platform marks stale data.

4. What is tested at handover?

Request a live location check, ignition-event check, short test trip and the alerts in the agreed scope. Test using the authorised owner's account.

5. Who controls access?

Identify the account administrator, named users and the process for removing access. Confirm history retention, available exports and what happens when service ends.

6. What does fuel accuracy mean?

Ask for calibration method, tank suitability and a measured refill check. Agree how movement, slopes and sensor settling are handled before investigating a drop.

7. How does support work?

Get the actual contact path, support hours, warranty conditions, call-out terms and replacement arrangements in writing. Do not assume a recovery guarantee.

8. Which features are ready?

Ask the supplier to demonstrate promised features and distinguish configured functions from proposed integrations. Confirm additional hardware, licences and testing.

Use this at handover

A practical acceptance test for one vehicle.

  1. Match the installed device to the correct vehicle and authorised account.
  2. Check the location and its timestamp while the vehicle is stationary.
  3. Test ignition events and record a short agreed journey.
  4. Review that trip in the owner's app or dashboard.
  5. Trigger an agreed geofence or movement alert and confirm the recipient.
  6. Record the service expiry, support contact and any unresolved items before sign-off.

For fuel systems, agree a separate tank calibration and measured refill test. These checks assess the agreed setup; they are not a promise of uninterrupted coverage or theft recovery.

What if a supplier offers a lower price?

Compare the same equipment, included months, installation, renewal, access and support. A cheaper device-only offer may suit some buyers, but it is a different scope from an installed, connected service.

Sky Worth's standard starting point

UGX 385,000 covers standard tracking for the first year on an eligible vehicle in the Kampala installation area, including tracker, fitting, platform and data. Renewal from year two is UGX 120,000 per year.

Fuel sensors, cameras and other advanced systems are quoted separately. Confirm the written scope and warranty before booking.

Make a fleet decision

Test a sample before a wider rollout.

For several vehicles, agree the sample vehicle, reporting needs, account roles and acceptance criteria before expanding. Record baseline operating costs and compare reports with vehicle records, receipts and actual use.

A supplier's savings percentage is not your forecast. Measure whether your own team can identify exceptions and act on them consistently.

This guide explains how Sky Worth scopes systems. It does not rank other suppliers or independently certify their equipment.
